NTL

ntl:

NTL are one of the biggest players in the UK. However they are in considerable financial difficulties. They concentrate on their cable services but do sell to the general home market as well. They have a very simple 3/2/1 tariff. You pay 3p peak, 2p off-peak and 1p at the weekend per minute (plus 5p connection charge). You can also use their service for International calls, but even with their £2.00 per month International option they are not the cheapest to any destinations.

They do have some good all inclusive tariffs, particularly their Talk-unlimited 24, which lets you call geographic numbers (01--- or 02---) free all the time for £25 per month. You can of course add broadband cable access

Very simple pricing structure. 3p/2p/1p Peak/Off-peak/Weekend
Plus 5p connection charge
Basic line rental of £9.50 per month. Broadband 512k plus phone £25
Add £15.50 for unlimited calls all the time (£9 for off-peak only)
You do need to be in one of their cable areas
Full range of divert, answer phone, caller-id and other services available

NB: Cable and Wireless (also branded Mercury) were acquired by NTL, who stopped  selling their home services to new customers. They had numerous different tariffs aimed at a number of different markets. In general, they seemed to sell themselves against BT; and for almost all calls they were slightly cheaper than BT even after BT's numerous discount schemes. However they were never the cheapest per minute.
