ADSLADSL is now just about available, though you might have to wait a while. The trials have finished and you can order the service. BT call their service Openworld and you can have it for £75 connection plus £39.99 a month. It will let you have an always on internet connection and a single voice line. You can download at 512k a second or upload at 256k. However if your local exchange has a large number of ADSL customers the speeds will drop, this problem is known as the contention ratio. BT even have their own highspeed portal so you can try things like streaming video. For heavy users of the Internet it is probably going to be reasonable value. It is more expensive than other forms of unlimited access, but you should be paying for speed and reliability. However less than half the exchanges in the country are ready, and all users have to be within three km of their exchange. BT will supply a usb DSL modem but you will need a reasonable computer (Win98 Pentium II or better, no Mac access yet). Other suppliers are selling are selling rebranded versions of the BT service. Freeserve are the same price as BT and are promising quicker delivery. Clara are asking £175 connection plus £49.99 per month. Demon are offering the same terms as Clara. Eclipse are available in the South West for £49 plus Vat per month! CableCable modems are only available for use in certain geographic areas. They can offer similar speed to ADSL, however you are dependant on local conditions. For instance, if there were a number of users in your local street, your access can slow down as the local cable only has a certain capacity. The leaders in the UK market are probably NTL with £150 installation cost plus £40 per month. Telewest are slightly cheaper at £100 installation (inc Network Card) plus £33 per month |
