There are two significant companies in the UK, Telewest and NTL. However between them they cover less than half the country. If you are in a cable enabled area, you probably have been marketed at directly! The web sites for the two companies have post code checks if you are unsure.

If you do live in a cable area, then their deals are always quite competitive compared to BT. If you are after a total deal including TV and/or Broadband Internet then the combined cost is likely to be lower than the equivalent from BT and Sky together. Many people choose it precisely because it is just one bill.

Check availability by postcode on their websites
If you use broadband internet, other local users can slow down your connection
Combined TV and phone packages are the best deals
If you already have Sky TV you can keep the minidish after one year if you change to cable
International phone rates tend to be uncompetitive
They might have to dig up your Garden
