Dolphin

Up

Dolphin is the newest network in Britain. It uses the European Tetra digital standard rather than GSM. They have tried to build a system based on the best of Private Mobile Radio and Cellular Telephony. Like PMR, calls between closed groups of users are free, and thus for some businesses where there is significant inter staff calling, it could well turn out the cheapest. However compared say to One2one precept tariff where calls between phones on the same account cost only 5p, their monthly charge of £25 seems quite large given that peak-rate landline calls are 20p. Dolphin supply terminals rather than handsets because their system can deliver data communications as well as speech.

Key Features

Free and unlimited Express Connect calls to your own terminals.
Only 90% coverage means patchy reception and blackspots until the network is finalised.
Very limited roaming possibilities.
Very chunky handsets compared to GSM.
