NOKIA Handsets

Nokia have been one of the biggest mobile phone companies in the world  for a few years. They consistently bring out handsets with features new to the market, and with phones like the 8810 and 8850 they compete with Ericsson and Motorola in the style stakes as well.

Entry Level Handsets

Their most popular phone, by numbers sold, is the 5110 series (inc NK402 from Orange) which is given away on some contract packages, or can be bought on All-in-One, from the likes of One2one, for less than £100. It uses their Navi key concept to keep the numbers of buttons down, has reasonable battery life at about 70hrs from its Nickel Hydride cells, and has good quality EFR reception. There are probably more colourful covers available for the model than any other phone available.

Mid Level Handsets

Above the 51-- series phones come the 6110 single band and 6150 dual band handsets. These have many more features than the the basic handsets, with games, calendars, calculators etc to keep their owners happy. The 6150 seems to have better reception on the 900mhz band than for the 1800mhz PCN users. There is up to three hours talk time on the standard Lithium Ion battery. Numerous users buy these for their good data compatibility, though the infra-red port is useless with Windows 98.

Top End Handsets

Their 8210 is their lightest phone at 79g yet is feature rich. It has a built in antenna and voice activated dialing when you hold down the names button. It has a standby time of 150hrs from the Lithium Ion battery and all the gimmicks you could want. Yet the handset that everyone wants is the shiny 8810, which most people think is one of the best looking phones ever. It has a chromed keyboard cover and large screen for its size plus every feature possible including infra-red data connectivity. This single band handset weighs only 118g and is very popular with the ladies for sticking in the stylish handbag on the big night out. Their flagship handset is the 8850 dual band version with brushed aluminium finish that weighs in at only 91g. There is an 8890 version for roaming in the USA.

WAP and Data Handsets

Nokia were the first company to really push the data market with the 9000 communicator series and the present model the 9110 is smaller and much better. The backlit 640 by 200 pixel screen is a joy to use, whether with address book, fax, internet or SMS software. You can connect with a digital camera or record voice notes. Yet the phone is a bit large for some people's pockets, weighing in at 253g. It is likely though, that many more customers will be tempted by the 7110 WAP phone. This is the first internet offering from Nokia and allows users to download information like train timetables, from special WAP enabled internet sites. Yet it does have to be said that there is very limited content on the net yet, and the phone is still a gadget rather than a real tool! See our WAP page!

BEST BUY

The Call for Less best buy recommendation goes to the 6150, which is now very sensibly priced, has excellent data connectivity with a laptop, is small and easy to handle and of course plays snake!!
